     Abbot Stevens  was a  master coach builder who joined partnership with Lewis Downing from 1827 till 1847

     Abbot Stevens and  Lewis Downing greatest achievement being the development of the Concord Stage Coach

     The Abbot, Downing and Company was born logging back orders for the new already famous Concord Stage Coach 

     It is often said the Concord Stage Coach never broke down... and that Concord Stage Coach 's durability was the essence that tamed the west

     Abbot Stevens and Lewis Downing were marketing a Concord Stage Coach in several variations that was in high demand including in Australia and Africa

     Disagreements with Abbot Stevens and  Lewis Downing spurred the partners to develop two rival companies

    In 1847 the J. S. and E. A. Abbot and Company was formed.    This new company was to be in direct competition with Lewis Downing and Sons     

     Lewis Downing retired in 1865 which resulted in a merger occurring between the families of Abbot Stevens and  Lewis Downing once again  

     The merger result was revive the original Abbot, Downing and Company until 1873 when it was renamed the Abbot - Downing Company
