Lewis Meriwether

Born: August 8, 1774 in Charlottesville, Virginia
Died: October 11, 1809 in Tennessee

   Lewis Meriwether served under Captain William Clark while in the Army.   Lewis Meriwether then served as private secretary to President Thomas Jefferson

   Lewis Meriwether  was a frontier explorer whose claim to history was the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 - 1806.    Lewis Meriwether took volumes of notes during the Lewis and Clark Expedition on natural vegetation, lay of the land and wildlife

   The rewards began when Lewis Meriwether was appointed Governor of the Louisiana Territory on his return from the Lewis and Clark Expedition 

   The death of  Lewis Meriwether has been shrouded in mystery.    The question being was Lewis Meriwether murdered and robbed or did he committed suicide
