Washington Irving 

Born: April 3, 1783 in New York City

Died: 1859 near Tarrytown, New York

     Washington Irving was an author and writer both in the Old World and the New World.    Washington Irving  is considered to be the first in American literature humor and comic published author

     A History of New York by Diedrich Knickerbocker was one of   the finer works done by Washington Irving

     Rip Van Winkle is a display of  Washington Irving 's enlightening talent, quite well remembered by many readers

     The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is by far one of the stories that made Washington Irving a legend for all time

     Washington Irving 's was the first American author to achieve literary fame on a international level

     Washington Irving had various occupations for short periods of time such as serving as a lawyer, Secretary of the American Legation, and then later working the family hardware business

     Washington Irving  traveled England, France and Italy extensively in his early life and in 1832 traveled by horseback throughout the American West writing about the Indians and their legends in A Tour on the Prairies

    Astoria was written about John Jacob Astor and his trading post by Washington Irving.    The Adventures of Captain Bonneville, U.S.A. was part factual and part fictional account of Benjamin Bonneville's explorations and fur trading in the west

     Washington Irving 's writings demonstrated a literary style of telling partial truths such as describing the North West Company fur trappers and fur traders as lords of the lakes and forests, active in baronial wassailing as many of the men were French Canadians and Highland Scots

    Washington Irving served as ambassador to Spain from 1842 to 1846 returning home to retire at his home Sunnyside near Tarrytown, New York
