     Lewis Downing was an expert wheelwright who engaged J. Stevens Abbot to come work for him in 1826 and became partners in 1827 till 1847

     The Lewis Downing outstanding accomplishment was the design and production of the Concord stagecoach. From 1847 till Lewis Downing 's retirement in 1865

     Lewis Downing and Sons were in direct competition with J. S. and E. A. Abbot and Company 

     In 1865, Lewis Downing 's sons merged with Abbot and became known as Abbot, Downing Company
