Gene Autry

    Gene Autry radio and movie star who was foremost in the portrayal of the singing cowboy rivaled only by Roy Rogers in appeal.   Gene Autry did his first film in 1935, The Phantom Empire delivered the cowboy with a song theme into the movie industry  

     When, The Singing Cowboy was released in 1936, Gene Autry was already a household name and a box office success. Gene Autry success kept Republic Pictures throughout the late 1930's in the money. In 1941, Gene Autry made the box office top ten list

    Privately, Gene Autry disliked horses but one would never have known it when he rode in with his horse, Champion
