Concord Stage Coach
Built by Abbott, Downing and Company, the Concord stagecoach was used extensively in the west due to its design in addition to being exported to Australia and Africa. The original basic model had a twelve feet wheel base and weighed in the vicinity of 2100 pounds
The coach itself rode on twin thoroughbraces made out of rawhide strips which made a 3 inch thick leather spring. The undercarriage was typically painted bright yellow but the coach body color was the purchaser's choice. Typical colors were scarlet red and green
The door window was glazed but the side windows were unglazed. Canvas or leather curtains hung above each window which could be rolled down during bad weather
Plush interiors usually had three upholstered bench seats that allowed twelve passengers to ride inside. It was possible for passengers to ride up on top of the coach and it is known of at least one coach that had a bench seat on the back of the stagecoach |
